Everyone has certain situations or fears that they would rather avoid.  This is a normal occurrence in everyday life.  Most people learn to control their fears and anxieties and carry on with their normal activities.  When you are unable to control a fear or anxiety with normal coping strategies you may be suffering from a phobia.

Many fears and phobias begin in childhood or adolescence.  Many adults report that their fears or phobias have drastically affected their lives to the extent that they will go to extreme lengths to avoid the object of their fears.

A fear or phobia can be learnt in childhood from an authority figure, such as a mother who is afraid to remove a spider from the bath etc., or it can begin as the result of a traumatic life event.
